Radio Free HPC (RFHPC) started in 2012 and, after a short break of 193 months, has returned to the airwaves (cyber waves?) with co-hosts Dan Olds, Henry Newman, and Shahin Khan.
The podcast covers a wide range of topics but is particularly focused on data center technology and challenges. These include high performance computing, power and cooling, new technology, and, really, whatever the hell they want to talk about.
Quick FAQ
"Why are you just covering HPC? There's this new thing called AI, have you heard of it?"
Yeah, we've heard of it and we do cover it. To us, HPC is a broad term used to refer to a very broad group of apps/workloads that have common characteristics.
- They are computationally intense
- Time to solution and quality of solution are critical
- The output is important enough to justify investment in high-end clusters and associated hardware/software
AI meets all of the criteria above just like bioscience, aerospace, weather prediction, and several other domains. In fact, AI is or will soon be folded into the workflows of nearly every 'traditional' HPC and enterprise application over time. This is going to put a lot of pressure on data centers and we'll be talking about how to deal with it.
"Was the old version of Radio Free HPC popular? I've never heard of it..."
Yes, it rose from obscurity to being mildly popular and, at times, entertaining. At our peak, we had as many as 16 sustained listeners and as many as 19 theoretical max listeners.
"I listened to the old show a couple of times and liked the arguing. Will there be more of that in this reboot?"
Yes, in fact we expect as much as 29% more arguing and a significant increase in the number of personal insults per episode.
"How often will this thing come out and how do I find out about it?"
We used to try to do weekly shows but failed due to other commitments, travel, etc. And there were just weeks when nothing important happened. But to answer your question, could be every couple of weeks, could be once a month, or we could record a marathon 8-10 hour single episode. Depends on what's happening and our mood.
We're getting together our RSS feeds and such but in the short term we'll be publicizing the episodes through the RFHPC X account and our individual social media accounts.

- Radio Free HPC LIVE(opens in new tab), Nov 11. The Radio Free HPC podcast is a joint production by industry pundits focused on High Performance Computing. While there are other HPC podcasts out there, we wanted to create something that was both informative and fun to listen to. Join us for our annual live podcast recording this year at SC17. The event starts at 6:00 pm on Nov. 12 at the Guard and Grace Steak House(opens in new tab) in Denver.
- SC17, Nov 12-17. The international conference on high performance computing kicks off Sunday with Tutorial Sessions.
- StartupHPC Meetup at SC17(opens in new tab), Nov 12. StartupHPC is a grass roots community for STEM- and HPC-inspired entrepreneurs, corporations, venture capital firms, academia, government agencies, and support organizations. The StartupHPC Meetup takes place at the Rock Bottom Brewery(opens in new tab) at 5-9 pm on Sunday, Nov.12. Please register so we know you are coming but feel free to just show up. This is a free no-host gathering and the idea is to be relaxed and network.
- Dell HPC Community Meeting, Nov. 13(opens in new tab). The Dell EMC HPC Community is a worldwide technical forum that fosters the exchange of ideas among researchers, computer scientists, technologists, and engineers and promotes the advancement of innovative, powerful HPC solutions.
- DDN User Group at SC17(opens in new tab), Nov 13. The DDN User Group(opens in new tab) brings the HPC community together with DDN executive and technical leadership to share how leading global organizations are leveraging innovative new approaches, best practices, and technologies to raise the bar on HPC discoveries. This year, we are hosting the user group at the Embassy Suites, which is a three minute-walk across the street from the Colorado Convention Center.
- SC17 Plenary on Smart Cities(opens in new tab), Nov 13. The Smart Cities(opens in new tab) initiative looks to improve the quality of life for residents using HPC, urban informatics, and other technologies to improve the efficiency of services. The event starts at 5:30pm on Monday, Nov. 13 in the Colorado Convention Center.

Hyperion Research will present new, real-world findings on the use of on premise data centers versus public, private and hybrid clouds for HPC workloads--including drivers, barriers and near-term plans. Spectra Logic will discuss current trends affecting data storage, especially in cloud environments.

- Henry notes that someone has already picked up his idea about using Blockchain to fight Fake News. In fact, they are doing an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) for their PUBLIQ cryptocurrenc(opens in new tab)y to fund the project.
- Rich notes that Intel is now shipping their Optane SSDs(opens in new tab), which the company claims outperform NAND devices by 4x. Henry says the things are pretty expensive though.
